“If we don’t put our childrens’ mental health first on our priority list, then we may as well be talking to a brick wall, because if our children are not feeling safe, secure, happy and loved, there’s no learning taking place today!”
Here’s how we can start to change our focus towards the mental wellbeing of our students.
People with low literacy skills may not be able to read a book or newspaper, understand road signs or price labels, make sense of a bus or train timetable, fill out a form, read instructions on medicines, or use the internet.
Lacking vital literacy skills holds a person back at every stage of their life. As a child, they will not be able to succeed at school, as a young adult, they will be locked out of the job market, and as a parent, they will not be able to support their own child’s learning. This intergenerational cycle makes social mobility and a fairer society more difficult.
Literacy is a fundamental right and the foundation for lifelong learning. It imparts knowledge, skills and the self-confidence to transform lives, leading to better health and income as well as fuller participation in the community. Literacy is a key skill and a key measure of a population’s education.
The only bird that dares to peck an Eagle is the Raven. It sits on the Eagle's back and pecks its neck. However, the Eagle doesn't respond or fight with the Raven. ”It does not spend time or energy with the Raven. It just opens its wings and begins to fly higher in the sky. The higher the flight, the harder it is for the Raven to breathe and the Raven eventually falls due to lack of oxygen. ”Not all battles you need to respond to. Not all arguments or critics you need to respond to or answer back. Just lift your standards, they'll fall off! Stop wasting time with the 'Ravens'.
I run a community-based organization which provides services to the most vulnerable and marginalized children in the Sansamwenje community of Isoka District, Zambia. The organization serves in the areas of early childhood education and primary education.
I set it up because the children in Sansamwenje community have no access to early childhood education and primary education. The community has only one public primary school, which is unworkable for most (unaffordable). So our focus is to build schools in Sansamwenje community so as to allow more vulnerable children to have access to early childhood education and primary education.
